It took my mother quite a while to recognize what the five mascots of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games really are, except the panda one, after the offical announcement in a mass gala.
The Five Friendlies are claimed to" embody the natural characteristics of four of China's most popular animals--the Fish, the Panda, the Tibetan Antelope, the Swallow--and the Olympic Flame".
Nornal Chinese, like my mother and myself, can hardly agree. It seems to be the result of trade-off somehow. Fish is not allowed to be eaten in Tibetan culture. I haven't hear of any folklore about swallow.
Chinese are confused of the Friendlies. Are foreigners?
